The World of Banksy

Season's Greetings

Port Talbot, Wales, 2018

Banksy’s Season’s Greetings, created in 2018 on the wall of a garage in Port Talbot, Wales, is a striking mural that blends the artist’s critique of global issues like environmental pollution and child health with a touch of innocence.

In Port Talbot, home to Tata Steel; one of the UK’s largest steel production centers, the town has long struggled with dust pollution due to industrial activities. This pollution particularly affects children, causing asthma, respiratory illnesses, and other health problems.

Banksy drew inspiration for this piece from a message he received from Gary Owen, a local man and former steel plant worker. Owen, deeply aware of the impact of dust pollution on children a problem affecting over 90% of children under 18 worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) reached out to Banksy, asking him to highlight the issue. Owen was overjoyed when Banksy responded positively by creating the mural, which soon drew thousands of visitors.

The artwork uses both outer walls of a garage to create a three-dimensional illusion: on one side, a child is depicted with arms outstretched, tongue out, catching snowflakes; on the other side, there’s a dumpster with a burning fire. At first glance, it looks like a cheerful winter scene, but as you turn the corner of the garage, the fire reveals itself as burning trash, and the “snowflakes” the child is catching are actually ash rising from the blaze. The child’s black-and-white drawing aligns with Banksy’s recurring theme of innocence and nostalgia, but this innocence contrasts sharply with the ash, unveiling the mural’s critical dimension.

Season’s Greetings is a multilayered work that combines Banksy’s critique of environmental pollution and child health with innocence. It directly references Port Talbot’s dust pollution issue. Banksy draws attention to the devastating effects of environmental pollution on children while inviting viewers to reflect on the severity of this problem.

The title, Season’s Greetings, ironically nods to holiday greetings, but this greeting carries a bitter message, critiquing consumer society’s indifference to environmental issues.

Season’s Greetings emerged in 2018, a period when Banksy focused on environmental issues and social injustices. That year, global environmental awareness was on the rise, with young activist Greta Thunberg leading the Fridays for Future movement to highlight climate change and pollution.

The mural’s appearance created a huge buzz in Port Talbot; thousands of visitors flocked to the town to see it. While the local community appreciated the attention the artwork brought, its removal in 2019 to be sold to a collector sparked renewed debates about the public value of Banksy’s works. The piece is now in a private collection, though the people of Port Talbot had hoped it would remain on permanent display in their town.”
