The World of Banksy

Gorilla in a Pink Mask

Eastville, Bristol, England, 2004

Painted on the wall of a social club in Bristol’s Eastville area in 2004, Gorilla in a Pink Mask is an impactful mural by Banksy that critiques identity and the societal masks individuals wear.

In 2004, Banksy’s early works were frequently seen. Street art had not yet fully integrated into high art, but Banksy was already recognized as a local icon in Bristol’s streets.

The gorilla in the piece is depicted with Banksy’s signature black-and-white stencil aesthetic, while the vivid pink party mask on its face creates a striking contrast. The bright pink tone of the mask, juxtaposed with the gorilla’s wild nature, reflects Banksy’s style of blending humor with unease.

Gorilla in a Pink Mask symbolically addresses Banksy’s critique of identity, societal roles, and the masks individuals adopt. The gorilla represents humanity’s primal instincts, while the pink party mask symbolizes societal roles, false identities, and the personas individuals perform in society. The gorilla wearing a mask critiques how people conceal their true identities behind these “masks.”

Gorilla in a Pink Mask prompts viewers to reflect on identity and societal roles, showcasing Banksy’s early creativity and critical approach.

The social club where the mural was located serves as a meaningful setting for Banksy’s critique, as it is a space where societal roles are often performed.

Gaining popularity among locals, the mural was unfortunately painted over in 2011 by the building’s new owner, who reportedly did not recognize its significance. This incident once again highlights the ongoing tension between street art and property rights, as well as the vulnerability of Banksy’s public works in an ever-changing urban landscape.

In a 2013 statement, Banksy defended the idea that street art should remain in place, criticizing “hedge-fund managers who cut out these works to hang above their fireplaces.”
