The World of Banksy

Sweep It Under the Carpet

Chalk Farm Road, London, 2006

Banksy’s Sweep It Under the Carpet, which appeared in 2006 on the outer wall of the White Cube Gallery on Chalk Farm Road in London, is an iconic work that showcases the artist’s critique of global issues and societal neglect. The piece addresses the Western world’s tendency to ignore serious problems.

The artwork depicts a woman dressed in a maid’s uniform, appearing to sweep dirt under a red brick wall with a broom.

Sweep It Under the Carpet is a metaphor for Banksy’s critique of the Western world’s indifference to global issues. The maid sweeping dirt under the wall symbolizes society’s tendency to ignore serious problems. In 2006, the AIDS epidemic was still wreaking havoc, particularly in Africa, while global poverty struggled to find a place on the Western world’s agenda. Through this work, Banksy criticizes the West’s approach of “sweeping problems under the rug”; the maid figure can be seen as a representative of this indifference. The woman’s role as a maid also highlights social hierarchies and invisible labor, implying that the lower classes are often forced to confront these issues.

The red brick wall in the piece serves as a symbolic barrier. This wall represents the Western world’s effort to protect its comfort zone and its tendency to ignore problems in the outside world. Banksy invites viewers to consider that these temporary solutions won’t work in the long run and that confronting these issues is inevitable.

The placement of the work on the wall of the White Cube Gallery is no coincidence. White Cube is a significant hub of the contemporary art world, but Banksy critiques its sterile and elitist structure, demonstrating that art in public spaces can create a more meaningful dialogue. The fact that the piece was painted over a month later due to the gallery’s policy also reveals the art world’s stance toward such critical interventions. This work by Banksy is not just a piece of street art but also a manifesto that questions the contradictions within the art world itself.
