Stokes Croft, Bristol, England, 1999
In 1999, The Mild Mild West emerged in Bristol’s Stokes Croft area, marking one of Banksy’s early works and a significant milestone in the city’s street art scene.
This mural is considered one of Banksy’s first large-scale pieces, reflecting his critical stance on authority, capitalism, and societal norms. It depicts a bear holding a Molotov cocktail, confronting three riot police officers, symbolizing Bristol’s alternative culture, spirit of resistance, and defiance against authority.
Measuring 5.5 meters high and 6 meters wide, The Mild Mild West portrays the police in full riot gear, emphasizing the oppressive nature of authority. The inscription “The Mild Mild West” at the top of the mural ironically references Western films and Bristol’s nickname as the “mild wild west.”
Located in Stokes Croft, a hub for independent businesses, artists, and activists in the 1990s, the area was also known for frequent clashes with gentrification and authority. The mural is deeply tied to Bristol’s social and political context in the late 1990s. In 1998, during a rave party in Stokes Croft, police intervened with plastic bullets and tear gas, sparking significant anger among locals. This event became a symbol of anti-authority resistance in the area.
Banksy’s mural can be seen as a direct response to this incident; the bear represents the local community’s defiance against authority, while the Molotov cocktail symbolizes the potential anger of this resistance. At the same time, the mural’s humorous tone—depicting a bear facing off with police—reflects Banksy’s style of addressing serious issues with irony.
Since its creation, the mural has become one of Bristol’s cultural icons and remains preserved. The building at 80 Stokes Croft, where the mural is located, is regarded by locals as “Banksy’s home.” The community has embraced the mural as a symbol of resistance, with its spirit notably reignited during the 2011 Stokes Croft riots.
Banksy’s work demonstrates how, even early in his career, he created a powerful societal impact and used street art as a tool for protest.
The Mild Mild West is an early masterpiece in which Banksy addresses authority and societal norms with humor and symbolism.
