Banksy\u2019s Slave Labour, which appeared in 2012 on the wall of a Poundland store on Turnpike Lane in London\u2019s Wood Green area, is a significant work that strikingly showcases the artist\u2019s critique of global issues such as capitalist exploitation and child labor.

Slave Labour depicts a small child working on their knees; the child is sewing beads onto a Union Jack flag with an old sewing machine. The child\u2019s face is expressionless and weary, a way for Banksy to highlight the emotional and physical burden of child labor. The act of sewing the flag symbolizes how cheap labor is exploited for global brands, while the presence of the Union Jack critiques how this exploitation is often concealed under the guise of national pride. The artwork\u2019s placement on the wall of a Poundland store is no coincidence; as a chain selling cheap products, Poundland represents a consumer culture that frequently relies on child labor in global supply chains.

The United Kingdom, despite being a major player in the global economy, may have unethical practices like child labor at the core of this economy. In 2012, the effects of the global economic crisis were still being felt; at the same time, child labor, particularly in the textile industry, remained a serious issue. According to UNICEF\u2019s 2012 data, 168 million children worldwide were working, often in hazardous conditions.
